Enemies is band that I play in and regularly produce designs for. I love being able to create merchandise designs for my own band. Here’s a selection of some of our stuff.
To visually convey the desire for adventure, exploration and escapism found throughout the lyrics and sounds on this second Enemies album.
The theme of optimistic exploration given by the album’s title conjured up images of old-timey maps, parchment diagrams and birds about to take flight. With this pre-digital imagery in mind it became clear that good old-fashioned illustration by hand would be a well-suited approach towards creating the final artwork. A loose sketch inspired by the face of a compass became the jumping-off point for the album cover, and took many iterations with various decorations, colours and type-treatments before arriving at the final visual. Other original illustrations including decorated birds and imaginary maps were also used to create a cohesive, adventurously-spirited package.
Coco et Moi was a song we wrote after a tour of Europe in 2010. Coco is the name of a puppy who I fell madly in love with during a two-day stay in Paris. I decided to celebrate my love for Coco by using her photograph for the design of the 7 inch single.
Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from clever concepts.
After the success of the RAN Project with
Alex Sinclair, we decided to collaborate again on this one. There was something about the songs on this album that conjured up images of twilight in all of our minds, so Alex went out at twilight on a couple of evenings and took some beautiful photos of the people and houses within his residential area. We decided to use a photo of his brother Jody for the cover and I got to work on designing the overall package. It was a real treat designing for the different formats of vinyl, CD and cassette loved seeing how the artwork translated across them.
