RAN Album Artwork

Process

RAN was a punk band that I played in from 2008 until 2010. We recorded our first album just as I was finishing up my first year at college. For the first year of the course, students were encouraged to abandon computers and take a proper hands-on approach to graphic design. Needless to say, by the end of the year I had a lot of practice in cutting out letters from paper.

I decided to embrace this way of working for the RAN artwork and proceeded to cut the 71 characters that make up the song names out of a4 sheets of card. Together with the photographer/artist Alex Sinclair, we filled my garden shed with wire to hang the letters off. The beauty of this ‘installation’ was that the names of the songs would only line up when viewed from a specific straight-on angle. Otherwise, it was just a web of letters.

Thanks a lot to Alex Sinclair for helping to set up and photograph the scene. Thanks also to
Will Rice for additional design help.
